THE EDITOR, Sir:
SINCE THE Minister of Finance announced the increase in GCT on some commodities, some business operators seem to be overstepping the bounds and making a clean sweep, so that nearly every item now attracts GCT.
This is totally unfair and is confusing the consumers. It is appalling and ridiculous to see some small basic items that the consumer is requested to pay GCT on.
In view of this, I am apt to believe that there might be some swindling going on, because at some of the business places, an item attracts GCT, while at others, the same item does not.
Therefore, it is imperative that the necessary steps be taken immediately to relieve the stress that is confusing consumers re: the recommended items GCT is to be paid on.
I firmly believe in the imposition of GCT because it is the only method that this across-the-board taxation will involve every person.
The Minister needs to set up a control system, so that the purchasing public and the business sector can know readily what commodities are taxable under the GCT Act, in order to eliminate the perception of a wicked government.
What we need are some GCT officers to hit the road to clamp down on these irregularities.
I am, etc.,
