Show more care for pedestrians
published: Wednesday | June 25, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON FRIDAY, June 20, 2003, it really was the first time (for a long time) that I had difficulty crossing the Spanish Town Road. Sometimes the flow of traffic makes it easy to get across.

This particular morning, realising that traffic was heavy and there appeared to be no way I would have been able to dash across, I began beckoning to motorists that I wanted to cross and so I stepped off the curb (dangerous I know) in an attempt to draw attention.

Absolutely no one cared enough to stop! I was so shocked, because I thought we were a caring lot!! It had to take someone knowing me before I was able to cross. Yes, Mr. Claude Suckoo stopped and forced others to stop, thus allowing me to cross. Thank you, Claude Suckoo.

Time and time again I hear persons from my company saying how difficult it is to cross that particular section of the road since the bridge has been closed and go further to say that motorists are extremely selfish and uncaring.

Yes, my experience, I must say has allowed me to develop a caring attitude towards my fellow pedestrians. Therefore, when I'm being driven I look out for those pedestrians who don't have a crossing to use.

This is an appeal for those of you selfish motorists to begin to care more for pedestrians. In situations where there is a busy thoroughfare (like Spanish Town Road, approaching the vicinity of the now defunct bridge) think about pedestrians who are crossing from both sides please.

I am, etc.,

ANDREA LAWRENCE

St. Catherine
