Mayors sworn in today
published: Thursday | June 26, 2003

By Balford Henry, News Editor

THIRTEEN MAYORS 11 representing the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and two representing the People's National Party (PNP) will be sworn in today, following the JLP's crushing win of last Thursday's Local Government elections.

The swearing-in for the 14th Council, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, which represents both parishes will be held next week Thursday, July 3, in accordance with the KSAC Act.

Tivoli Gardens' Councillor and member of the Senate, Desmond McKenzie, will become Mayor of Kingston next week based on the party's 21-19 win of the KSAC on Thursday. His deputy will be JLP Councillor for Whitehall division, in North Central St. Andrew, Lee Clarke.

In the Portmore Municipality, journalist George Lee will have the honour of being its first Mayor today when he is sworn in at the Portmore HEART Academy at 5 p.m.

Another interesting development today is the situation in May Pen, where the JLP and the PNP agreed that, on the basis of winning the popular vote in the parish, the JLP will name the Mayor and the PNP will name the Deputy Mayor.

New Mayor of May Pen will be JLP Councillor Milton Brown of the Mineral Heights division, while the PNP Councillor for May Pen West, Leopold Hylton will be Deputy Mayor. The deal was brokered by both parties after they dead-heated 11-11 for the 22 divisional seats in the Council.

JLP Councillor for Junction, St. Elizabeth, Franklyn Witter will become Mayor of Black River, with Shirley Myers as his deputy.

In Montego Bay, the JLP's Noel Donaldson (Montego Bay North East), son of former PNP Mayor of the City, Cecil Donaldson, will be named Mayor. His deputy will be Cecil Davis of Somerton.

VETERAN COUNCILLOR

The decision on Mandeville's Mayor was the last to be made last night, when JLP Councillors voted 5-3 in favour of the veteran Councillor for Christiana Desmond Harrison at a caucus. He won over newcomer Sally Porteous.

The only woman to be sworn in today will be the new Mayor of Morant Bay, JLP Councillor Joan Spencer (Seaforth). Her deputy will be Michael Hue of Port Morant.

Former medical officer assigned to the prisons, Dr. Raymoth Notice, who won Bog Walk for the JLP, will be the new Mayor of Spanish Town. His deputy will be Dr. Andrew Wheatley of Naggo Head.

Bobby Montaque, the only successful JLP candidate in St. Mary in the last Local Government election (1998) and who represents Carron Hall in the parish, will take over as Mayor, today. His deputy will be 33-year-old Richard Creary (Richmond), younger brother of fellow JLP Councillor Don Creary (Castleton).

The other PNP Mayor will be Delford Morgan in Sav-la-Mar, the only Council won by the party. His deputy will be Bertel Moore (Negril).

Other Mayors to be sworn in today, are Johnathan Bartley (Wakefield) in Falmouth. His deputy is Fitz Albert Christie (Ulster Spring); Lucea- Lester Crooks (Riverside), deputy being Vasca Brown (Hopewell); Port Antonio- Alston Hunter (Manchioneal), his deputy being Rupert Kelly (Hope Bay); St. Ann's Bay - Delroy Giscombe, his deputy being Sydney Stewart (Bamboo).
