THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN EXPRESSING my sorrow and disgust at the highly unnecessary deaths of the children killed in St. Thomas I would like to suggest that we place 'sleeping policemen' at some twenty or thirty metres on either side of all pedestrian crossings and on all roads passing schools.
Such structures should also be placed on the sections of main roads which pass through towns such as Porus.
In fact it is my belief that all cars imported to Jamaica should be adjusted mechanically to limit the top speed to about 60 kilometres per hour. I think there is some such restriction in Bermuda.
Merely trying to educate drivers about the need to drive carefully will not be good enough. Every driver should be required to take a written test on the Road Code on renewing his or her Driver's Licence. This would at least get them to read a Road Code book every four or five years.
I am, etc.,
