Invaders continue to falter
published: Thursday | June 26, 2003

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

INVADERS OF Trelawny wasted a good opportunity to improve their situation in the Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF) National Premier League (NPL) qualifying competition after playing to a 0-0 draw with Los Perfectos in the return round game played at the Elleston-Wakeland Community Centre yesterday.

The home team missed a number of good chances, as a win would have taken them to the top of the points tables after previous leaders Santos were beaten by Star Cosmos of St. Mary.

Invaders joined Santos on eight points, to trail the late charging Star Cosmos by one.

Yesterday's results sets up an interesting final round of matches on Sunday with all three teams fighting down to the wire for the two spots in next year's Wray and Nephew National Premier League.

Invaders' result should cause some concerns for coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis as it marked the third straight game they were failing to come up with a win after getting off to a good start.

It is also an extension of their poor form in the past month as they also struggled towards the end of the Western Confederation Super League, winning on penalties over Granville of St. James.

Yesterday, Livingston Williams squandered a number of easy chances including one in the second half that he skied with Los Perfectos' goalkeeper Joel Messam lying helplessly on the ground.

Messam's performance was also instrumental in his team's draw as he pulled off several good saves.

Former Holmwood Technical striker Clayon Barrett had two good chances late in the game to drive a spike in Invaders' chances but missed badly inside the six-yard box. The diminutive striker headed just over the bar in the 90th minute and two minutes later shot wide with just goalkeeper Nicholas Dixon to beat.
