Developing aquatic sports in Ja
published: Monday | June 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

KINDLY ALLOW me space to comment on, and make suggestions regarding aquatic sports in Jamaica. For decades, our athletes have excelled in most areas of competitive sports, with little or mention of aquatic sports. This failure is due partly to the lack of or the inadequacy of proper training facilities.

Aquatic sports is one of the major attractions being offered to the visitors, but with a polluted sea, a repetitive and redundant Dunn's River Falls or the ancient river rafting cannot be called modern nor economic attractions.

With these problems being hindrances to national development and growth, I wish to suggest that an aquatic arena will be the ideal solution. Such an arena should be sited in close proximity to one of the rivers being used for rafting. Martha Brae being centrally located and with lands of ideal topography nearby, makes it a first choice.

An aquatic arena should allow for the preparation of athletes, the hosting of local and international aquatic sports and also for the recreation of locals and tourists alike.

Will our government give due consideration to this suggestion?

I am, etc.,
