Gunmen - Ja's terrorists
published: Tuesday | July 1, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE as an expatriate having lived and worked in Jamaica during the 1990's. I read the Gleaner online avidly as I enjoy keeping up with events in your country.

The Gleaner's editorial of June 24, "The Mountain View Siege" should be required reading for everyone in the PNP government. How can the Government of Jamaica allow this vital thoroughfare, both for residents of Jamaica and visitors from abroad on their way to the hotels in New Kingston, to be "under siege"?

You are battling a terrorist of your own making in Jamaica, only he is not called Al Qaeda, he is called "the gunman." The state that is sponsoring this terrorist network is not Afghanistan, it is your own system. The benign way that the GOJ is dealing with this threat, the lack of a cogent plan of attack, the formation of committees, the lawyering to death, the deadlock and paralysis, is reminiscent of our own response to the numerous terrorist attacks we suffered all over the world during the 1990's.

You are now in the September 10th of your discontent in Jamaica, and your September 11 is right around the corner, only you just don't know it yet. It is long past time for your leadership, such as it is, to announce your own policy of pre-emption.

I am, etc.,
