A 17-year-old student did his CXC and SSC (Secondary School Certificate) exams while in jail at the Black River police station, last week, after being remanded in custody on pleading guilty to two counts of unlawful wounding.
Resident Magistrate for the parish, Lyle Armstrong said she was remanding the young man, who is understood to be a "straight A' student but with a violent temper, to send a message to other violent young people.
Because of his incarceration, the student had to be taken to school to do his Spanish CXC exam and six SSC subjects, between June 23 and 30. He has been remanded since June 13, has pleaded guilty and is to be sentenced today by the RM.
Facts of the case are that on June 13, a worker at the school reported to a security officer, Barrington Francis, that the student was running him down with an icepick. Mr. Francis approached the student and asked him to hand over the icepick. He refused and was asked by the security guard to accompany him to the principal's office, which he also refused to do.
The student pulled an icepick from his waist and moved towards the security officer who started backing away. Whilst the guard was backing away he lost his balance and fell backwards. The student then used the icepick to stab him over his eye and in his back. He was rushed to the Black River Hospital where he was admitted. The student pleaded guilty to the charge.
