PNP, JLP living in their own little worlds

THE EDITOR, Sir:
BOTH MAJOR political parties, the People's National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) appear to be living in their own little worlds. Both sides boast of receiving mandates in the two most recent elections, but what did they really receive?
In October the PNP was legally elected to office with less than 30 per cent of the registered voter population; last week the JLP won the local government elections with less than 20 per cent of the registered voter population. While these margins may be legal and may entitle them to rule, how can they purport to speak for the Jamaican people with such a small segment of the population electing them?
They congratulate themselves for winning elections on an ever decreasing number of votes. They should both be ashamed that they have created a political system that more than half the electorate wants no part of.
Both parties seem proud of themselves for being able to get their party faithfuls to vote and then extrapolate that to refer to the entire nation. Well news flash, PNP and JLP, neither of you can truly speak for a majority of Jamaicans because the majority voted for neither of you.
