Four-storey walk-ups work very well

THE EDITOR, Sir:
YOUR ESTEEMED contributor to the Real Estate section 'VITRUVIUS' denounces the concept adopted by the NHT in providing inner-city communities with four-storey walk-up residential buildings. Well, he should visit the 'Kenkot Apartments' on South Road in St. Andrew and see for himself that this concept works very well in an inner-city environment.
The four-storey walk-up apartment building was designed by our firm as a prototype building concept for a private developer. It was financed by the NHT for its contributors and has been occupied since 1995. Notwith-standing the Prime Minister and the NHT Chairman's visit to similar projects in Malaysia. Kenkot Apts is almost a replica in design to the proposed buildings by the NHT.
I do agree that there is a need for other types of residential buildings such as terraced housing and townhouses to be built. However we should not discriminate against one concept for another. One must remember the scarcity of urban land and our need to house the people.
