Ten Cubans deported
published: Wednesday | July 2, 2003

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE TEN Cuban nationals, who were detained in March, following their illegal landing in Montego Bay, St. James, have been sent home.

An officer attached to the Area One Immigration Department told The Gleaner that the group, which included nine men and one woman, left the island on Friday.

"They were desirous of going home and their request was granted," he said. "Tickets were provided, I don't know by whom, and they were escorted home."

He stated that the Cubans, who were reportedly fleeing their country to Puerto Rico, did not seek political asylum.

The group was discovered on March 7 at about 11:15 p.m., after their boat drifted onto the beach of the Wyndham Rose Hall Hotel in Montego Bay. The police were called in and the ten, all of Havana were refused landing. Their boat was towed to the Montego Bay Fire Station located on Barnett Street for storage.
