Gunmen pump 17 shots into 20-y-o
published: Thursday | July 3, 2003

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

THE TWO black flags hoisted outside the gate of 6a West Avenue in Greenwich Farm, Kingston, kept dancing in the breeze yesterday afternoon, as if waving goodbye to 20-year-old Ryan Dakers, who was shot 17 times at his home last Thursday by two gunmen.

This brutal killing came less than six months after Ryan and his family had received several death threats. They had made reports to the Hunts Bay police.

A sub-officer at Hunts Bay confirmed that threats were made against the family. The officer said the police are now looking for two men who have been implicated in Ryan's murder.

The young man who celebrated his 20th birthday a day before his life was snuffed out, graduated from the HEART Academy a month ago and was in the process of starting his career as an electrician.

His parents, 70-year-old Bernard Dakers and Valerie Walker, 49, watched in despair as the gunmen stood over their son's body and shot him several times, until his cry for help had faded.

"He was in the yard doing some painting when two gunmen jumped the wall and shot him in both legs. He ran to the side door of the shop and bawl out 'Mama, me get shot inna me foot and it feel like it a dead'," said Ms. Walker.

According to her, when she and her common-law husband attempted to assist him, the gunmen fired at least three shots at them, before advancing towards Ryan and finishing him off.

Reports are that there has been a long-standing feud between rival factions in the area. Word on the street is that Ryan was killed, following an order given by an area don.

Since last Thursday's killing the community has been tense, with the fragile peace existing between Nine Street and West Avenue now under threat.
