Three murders in five days
published: Sunday | July 6, 2003

By Roy Sanford, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

DETECTIVES FROM the Area One Flying Squad have joined forces with the Westmoreland police to probe three murders in the parish in one week.

Fisherman, Everton Cottrel, 51, was found hacked to death at his home in Belmont district on Monday.

Mr. Cottrel's body was discovered with multiple chops all over it, about 6:00 p.m. under an ackee tree by his neighbour who was on her way to the shop. He was last seen alive on Sunday about 5:00 p.m.

On Thursday, the community was once again plunged into shock when 21-year-old Marlon Gooden was found dead outside his board house with his neck partially severed from his body.

On the same day, two gunmen pounced on Courtney Calder, otherwise known as 'Stick Man,' as he walked along the Roaring River main road in the parish. It is reported that the men fired several shots in his direction, five of which hit his body. He was also stabbed two times in the chest and ear.

Sgt. Alva Douglas said the police had seen no link between the murders in Belmont and the one in Roaring River since they happened some 20 miles apart.

He said a man has been taken into custody for questioning into the murder of Gooden but as of Saturday no charges had been brought against him.
