I'm losing my hair!
published: Wednesday | July 9, 2003

HAIR LOSS can either be the result of acquired factors (yeast inflammation, hairstyles, chemical treatment) or genetic factors (male-pattern balding and female-pattern balding).

Dr. Patricia Yap, dermatologist, explained that some people have a family history of baldness in their families this is about whether your mother or father went bald early and the pattern of baldness.

Males have a certain pattern of baldness where there is a receding hairline or thinning on the crown whereas some females, she said, have a kind of generalised hairloss where basically their hair looks thinner, a little more spacey perhaps as they age.

"Now if you don't know the person very well, you perhaps couldn't tell that her hair is thinning but she would notice and her hairdresser would too. Also you will find that this thinning occurs after menopause... As the female hormone wanes the action of the male hormone on the hair follicle causes thinning," Dr. Yap explained.

One treatment for this thinning includes minoxidil, applied to the scalp twice daily and another treatment for men is finasteride, a daily pill that blocks the action of the male hormone, testosterone, on the hair follicle.
