Putting 'real teeth' in traffic law
published: Wednesday | July 9, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

HOW MANY more must die before the authorities take a stand against those who, without regards for other users of our roads, continue the 'road kill'? What are the costs to families and the health system due to loss of lives and injuries?

I do not think that road safety is given the priority concern it deserves. Recently, I witnessed several minibuses heading towards Kingston driving on the soft shoulder out of the line of traffic at breakneck speed with total disregard for passengers or other road users, My first thought was, where were the police when you need one? They were at White Marl doing spot checks.

Frankly, with the proliferation of cellular phones this 'spot check operation' has outlived its usefulness. Bus operators with cell phones will every time neutralise this police operation.

The authorities should put real teeth in the road traffic law. They should update the traffic laws to include video-taping of aggressive drivers. And how about motorised radar and video-equipped police cars?

I am, etc.,
