Allow us to debate
published: Wednesday | July 9, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

COULD IT be that the US withholding 'military aid' is a prelude or demonstration of the real threat, which is to take away economic aid and partnerships from the Caribbean? Why does the Caribbean need military aid anyway? We need justice and we need to support legal institutions/international courts that will guarantee us that justice, as we can never afford the military to secure the same.

Our leaders should tell us the truth behind their cowardly actions and allow us to debate what we are willing to concede to US imperialism and our short-term economic welfare: justice and security within an international framework or procuring an economic culture of US aid and tourist dollars in a recessive market threatened by war and terrorism.

I am hoping that our leaders have a vision for the Caribbean beyond tourism and being America's footstool.

I am etc.,
