Principal calls for more role models
published: Wednesday | July 9, 2003

By George Henry

Spaldings:

ALPHANSUS DAVIS, immediate past president of the Association of Principals and Vice Principals has called for more role models in the Jamaican society.

Speaking at the annual graduation ceremony of the Knox Junior School in Clarendon on Friday, Mr. Davis, who is principal of Spaldings High School in the parish, said Jamaica was yearning for good role models and exemplary leadership.

"For many of our leaders, the task of leading with integrity is being greeted with suspicion. The talk of corruption and lack of authority is on the lips of many persons and once we lose the moral authority in our spheres of leadership, whether it is at the home or at the workplace, we are destined for failure," he stated.

He said Jamaican parents needed to offer themselves as good role models for their children and that they should remember that their role as parents demanded that they pay full attention to the shaping of the characters of their children.

Mr. Davis, who is a trained guidance counsellor noted that the kind of characters being shaped by parents today will determine the characters that will govern the country tomorrow. He warned that if parents failed to be good role models while they shape characters, it would lead to the society's downfall.

Meanwhile, Mr. Davis beseeched the graduates not to allow anyone to tell them that they are worthless, and believe it. Instead, he said they should use what they are told as a spring board to success.

He called on them to look for the signs of strength, courage, wisdom and the inner beauty that they already possess, while recognising their excellent quality and improving on others.
