Shoot-out at Tinson Pen - Police engage suspected drug dealers in crossfire
published: Monday | July 14, 2003

THE NARCOTICS police are investigating an illegal drug flight, which took off from the Tinson Pen Aerodrome, Marcus Garvey Drive in South West St. Andrew, at about 5:00 o'clock yesterday morning.

Police sources say that shortly before the plane took off, members of the Narcotics Division challenged the suspected drug dealers who fired at them. It is believed that the men boarded a twin-engine Piper Navajo aircraft and flew to drop off their cargo in the Bahamas. They returned to the aerodrome at about 9 a.m,, but escaped in a waiting motor car.

BLOODSTAINS ON SEAT

Police believe that at least one of the men was injured during the early morning crossfire, as bloodstains were found on the seats of the plane. It is alleged that two police officers were also involved in the early morning drug flight, but this could not be confirmed.

Four port security corps guards, a gateman and a canine security guard who were on duty at the time of the incident were reportedly detained by the police for questioning. A car said to be owned by one of the security guards was also seized.

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) was unable to provide any information on the matter up to 9 p.m. last night. Several senior police spokesmen contacted said that they were aware of the incident, although they were unable to provide details.

Senior Superintendent Carl Williams, who heads the Narcotics Division, was said to have been injured during the incident and was not available for comment.
