A chance for change
published: Monday | July 14, 2003

THE EDITOR: Sir

IN THE recent Parish Council elections the people spoke. Many things will be said about the possible reasons for the JLP victory but one thing is for certain the result will be good for the country and it will certainly balance the power between the two parties. Jamaica Labour Party has the chance to show the people of this country good governance that it has always been clamouring for even at the local level.

Whereas the central government is plagued with inefficiencies, corruption, cronyism and lack of accountability, to name a few, the JLP must now show at the Parish Council level that they can preside and manage a system with the highest levels of fiscal management, efficiency, accountability and good governance.

The JLP must now weed out of the Parish Council system the tribal pork politics that has made the councils redundant and lack relevance in a modern society; the JLP must now provide the vision, show improvements in how the parish capitals are kept, how the funds are collected and disbursed, how we attract investments to the parishes and the quality service that the local agencies give to the people

I am, etc.
