Cops detain more suspects in Tinson Pen saga
published: Thursday | July 17, 2003

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

THE POLICE said they held yesterday, three suspects who they believe to be members of a drug-smuggling ring which was involved in Sunday's shoot-out with narcotics police at the Tinson Pen Aerodrome, Kingston.

A spokesperson for the St. James police said the suspects were picked up at a luxury hotel in Montego Bay.

Police sources said that one of the suspects, a 28-year-old Bahamian national, had been living at the hotel for some time. He said the other two suspects were a 42-year-old Jamaican national and another Bahamian.

On Monday, the name of the Jamaican national was released by the Constabulary Communication Network as one of two persons who were being sought by the narcotics police in connection with Sunday's operation at Tinson Pen.

Also, the police said they had warrants for the arrest of two persons who they said are likely to be charged with breaches of the Civil Aviation Act and conspiracy to export drugs.

Senior Supt. Carl Williams, head of the Police Narcotics Division, had told The Gleaner on Tuesday, that the plane they seized at Tinson Pen, after it returned from what they suspected to be a drug mission, was registered in Jamaica.

Reports are that about 5:15 a.m. narcotics detectives were intercepting the plane when they came under heavy gunfire. The plane took off and returned four hours later.
