published: Thursday | July 17, 2003

By Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN:

MAYOR OF Spanish Town, Dr. Raymoth Notice, has promised that under his watch, the St. Catherine Parish Disaster Committee will be proactive in dealing with disasters in the old capital.

Dr. Notice made the revelation when he addressed the first monthly meeting of the Committee at the Parish Council office on Monday.

"For some time now, this body remained dormant and, with the best intentions, served only in name, as its obligation couldn't be met through the lack of proper co-ordination between the various agencies that make up the committee, such as Cable and Wireless, National Waste and NWC," Councillor Notice said.

He said that the committee will be meeting once monthly.

"Our role is to put in place new ideas to fully activate the function of disaster management with the function of the disaster and non-governmental organisations within the parish, before any disaster occurs," he said

"We intend to approach the task by way of educating the citizenry of vulnerable areas, through emergency drill and exercise simulation, so as to enlighten them in the event of natural disaster."

He said that schools in the parish would also be targeted. The committee has seven components: Finance and Planning under Councillor Notice and Dr. William Soytal; Infrastructure and Traffic Norris Grant/ Devon Wint; Human Resources Keith Blake/Hopeton Rose; Public Health Owen Palmer /Everton Morrison and Municipal Norris Johnson/ Alvin Beckford.
