Fire hydrants not NWC's responsibility
published: Saturday | July 19, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE ALLOW me to correct an error of fact contained in a story titled 'Fire hydrant woes haunt St. Thomas', published in The Gleaner of Saturday, July 12 in which the responsibility for fire hydrants has been mistakenly assigned to the National Water Commission (NWC).

The public is advised that the National Water Commission neither has responsibility for the operation nor maintenance of fire hydrants. The assertion therefore that "it is the NWC that has the responsibility to make sure that they (fire hydrants) are in good working orders" is absolutely incorrect.

The National Water Commis-sion's sole responsibility with regards to fire hydrants is to supply them with water for fire-fighting services.

All other activities undertaken by the National Water Commis-sion with respect to fire hydrants have either been on contractual terms or in an attempt to curtail water wastage from leaking hydrants.

I am, etc.,

CHARLES BUCHANAN

Corporate Public Relations Manager

National Water Commission
