THE $775,000 GRADED stakes for the She's On Wheels Trophy over 1100 metres is the principal feature at Caymanas Park today. Post time is noon and 11 races are scheduled.
Also on the card is the 3-y-o and up overnight allowance race for the Merry Deal Cup over the straight five course and the rescheduled Eric Dias Memorial Cup claiming $260,000-$220,000 over the circular nine course.
The She's On Wheels Trophy, run in honour of the crack imported filly who was a dominant factor at the top level in the mid-'90s, has attracted five starters including 'Horse of the Year' I'MSATISFIED who shoulders top weight of 59kg - as usual.
Despite the small field, the race promises keen competition among the stable-companions I'MSATISFIED, RAKKADASH and SPIRIT OF JAMAICA, as well as the fleet-footed mare AWESOME POWER.
Leading trainer Philip Feanny holds a very strong hand with three challengers in I'MSATISFIED, RAKKADASH and SPIRIT OF JAMAICA, any of which is capable of winning this sprint.
The imported filly SPIRIT OF JAMAICA was a fighting winner of the round five President's Cup on June 28, coming from just off the early pace to collar INSATIABLE by half a length.
Before that she was soundly beaten by I'MSATISFIED in the Eileen Cliggott Trophy over 1300 metres on May 31, a race in which she went hell for leather on the lead with the then favourite AWESOME POWER and RAKKADASH in a blistering 45.4 for the first half mile.
Significantly, all three meet again and while AWESOME POWER will be more dangerous this time, they will more than likely play into the hands of I'MSATISFIED with leading all-time jockey Winston Griffiths again at the helm.
When contesting the Eileen Cliggott Trophy, AWESOME POWER was double teamed by SPIRIT OF JAMAICA and RAKKADASH in the backstretch and although pointing early in the straight, the damage had already been done.
Now drawn on the inside of both horses, the Patrick Chang-trained AWESOME POWER will prove a different kettle with champion jockey Trevor Simpson aboard. However, she'll have to go through 'SATISFIED' (needs no introduction) who has worked particularly well for this race and should prove equal to the task.
I expect him to race prominently on the outside before charging at AWESOME POWER in the last furlong.
Other firm fancies on the card are the fleet-footed American filly LIL' COUNTRY BOY to make all at the expense of AWESOME MINISTER in the Merry Deal Cup, the free running FRANCESCA'S DREAM to stave off ROYAL FLIGHT in the Eric Dias Memorial Cup, as well as last November's yearling sales topper HEARTOFAMAVERICK ($860,000) in the fifth for two-year-olds, STRAIGHT SIX over LITTLE PALIUM in the eighth and SPEED MACHINE to catch the well prepared RUNDUMPLINRUN in the ninth.
