That $50 toll
published: Monday | July 21, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE SEEMS to be an extensive problem with high prices in this country. We seem to lack insight into how some people exist. In the absence of this insight, people can be unwittingly forced into becoming defiant or to continue to promote a kind of behaviour which may have serious repercussions.

I am not suggesting that this country should not move with the times and with the rest of the world; but it would be more satisfactory if authorities concerned would deliberate a little longer before they throw into the 'face' of the public, matters about which they have not even arrived at a final decision.

The proposed toll charge of $50 to be implemented probably in August of this year on the Old Harbour Bypass road (14-kilometre) is very disturbing. Although they have not ideally finalised this as the figure to be charged, it is hardly likely that it will be any less. Even considering the different agencies involved in the pricing, the amount of money to be repaid for the erection of the road and the Government's intention to benefit from this levy.

If the toll is set at $20 at the start and gradually increased annually and in accordance with the value of the US$, which is being used as a guide, it would allow the motoring public a little breathing space, a chance to get to understand and appreciate the new system and to develop a 'mind-set' before they start to rebel or burn up the road.

We are moving on up and this is indeed a good gesture, but we need to remember that there are still many poorer people here who use motor vehicles to make a livelihood. If they have to pay a high toll, they in turn, will raise the fares which will put additional pressure on the travelling public.

I am, etc.,

ROSE DEWAR
