Addressing GCT on strata corporations
published: Monday | July 21, 2003
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WROTE to you on May 14, 2003, about the Minister of Finance's recent imposition of General Consumption (G.C.T.) on maintenance payable to strata corporations.
Whereas representations were made subsequently to the Minister of Finance asking him to reconsider this imposition and withdraw it, nothing further has been heard from him on the matter.
Because of problems strata corporations have been experiencing collecting maintenance, it was proposed a few years ago that the Registration (Strata Titles) Act be amended to empower Strata Corporations to which maintenance was owed to sell the apartments on which maintenance was owed to them so as to recover this maintenance.
If, therefore, the Minister of Finance insists strata corporations are to collect G.C.T. for him on maintenance payable to them by proprietors of apartments of their respective corporations, then he should assist these corporations in this endeavour by seeing to it the above mentioned amendment to the Registration (strata titles) Act is promulgated.
