Brigett Foster MADRID, Spain, CMC:
GRENADA'S ALLEYNE Francique and the Jamaican sprint hurdlers Brigett Foster and Maurice Wignall logged fine wins at the Madrid Super Grand Prix on Saturday.
Francique, the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championship gold medallist earlier this month, ran a season's best 44.78 seconds to land the 400 metres, while Wignall ran a fast 13.39 to win the men's 110-metre hurdles and Foster took the women's 100 hurdles in 12.62 seconds.
Namibia's 36-year-old veteran Frankie Fredericks also had a good win, topping younger rivals in the men's 200 metres.
Francique registered his second Grand Prix win in Europe this season as he topped his field.
Following up on his victory at the Slovak Gold meet in Bratislava last month, Francique dismissed American Derrick Brew (45.03) for his win, with Jamaican Brandon Simpson third in 45.17 seconds. Experienced Jamaican Davian Clarke was eighth in 45.90 seconds.
Wignall turned back the American pair of Arend Watkins (13.55) and Micah Harris (13.65) to post his fine win in the men's 110-metre hurdles, finishing only 0.01 seconds outside Chris Pinnock's national record.
Jamaicans Ian Weakley, Elva Goulbourne and Jermain Mason earned top-three finishes in their events.
Weakley (49.04) finished third in the men's 400-hurdles which American Bershawn Jackson won in 48.23, with Jamaicans Danny McFarlane (49.14), and Neil Gardner (49.36) fourth and fifth, respectively.
Goulbourne, the Common-wealth and CAC champion, finished third in the women's long jump at 6.68 metres, with Ukraine's Inessa Kravets winning at 6.76 metres.
Mason posted 2.27 metres for third in the men's high jump behind American winner Matt Hemmingway (2.30).
Fredericks sped to a 20.24 victory in the men's 200 metres, ahead of Nigeria's Francis Obikwelu (20.59).
