published: Monday | July 21, 2003

Beckford

CUXHAVEN, Germany, CMC:

JA'S FORMER Olympic silver medallist James Beckford produced a season's best 8.21 metres to capture the long jump title at Cuxhaven International meet on Saturday. Beckford, absent from most of the major meets this year, recorded his sixth win of the season, while topping American Walter Davis.

Another Jamaican, Ronetta Smith, also had a top three finish, competing in the women's 200 metres.

Beckford, second to the great Carl Lewis at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, soared to his winning effort with his last jump, to defeat Davis (8.04 metres).

Smith ran 23.61 seconds for third in the women's 200 metres, behind Ghanaian winner Anim Vida (23.18).

Germany's Lars Riedel sent the discus to 67.37 metres to defeat Michael Mollenbeck (67.20) in one of the main events of the meet.
