SOME 1000 young men and women from across the island tried their hands at a career in modelling when they entered the 2003 round of Pulse Model competitions.
However, only 300 made it through to the elimination rounds of the 'Fashion', 'Petite' and 'Male Face' competitions held on Sunday at the Villa Ronai property in St. Andrew.
The motley crew of entrants, which included several students from secondary and tertiary institutions, strutted their stuff on the catwalk armed with their dreams of becoming the next 'big thing' in the fashion world.
The first set presented to the large crowd of family, friends and well-wishers were those in the petite model category. The segment, which was open only to females below 1.74 metres (5ft 7.in) tall, saw the young women parading on-stage in their swimsuits. This generated some a excitement as the males in the audience cat-called loudly to the females they liked.
The male entrants for the Male Face competition followed and it became the female audience members' turn to make their sounds of approval. The males also wore swimsuits of their choice and from the sounds being made by the females, apparently most of them made the grade.
The final set to take the stage were those in the Fashion model competition. They, too, wore their own choice of swimsuit and as usual the male audience members made their opinions known.
After a 15-minute intermission the number was whittled down to 200 finalists, who will go on to try and make a name for themselves in the fashion industry.
Already last year's Male Face, Serchen Morris; Caribbean and Jamaica Fashion Model Jaunel McKenzie and 'Supermodel of the Caribbean' Janelle Robinson are all reaping success after appearing in several magazine layouts.
