The 20 finalists in the 'Miss Jamaica World 2003' competition were chosen and sashed in a two-hour long ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston on Sunday night. The finalists are 'Miss Bamboo Avenue', Candice Bromfield; 'Miss Maroon Town', Kemeisha Brown; 'Miss Dunns River Falls', Desiree Burke; 'Miss Lime Cay', Tracey Cowan; 'Miss Faiths Pen', Sharice Fernander; 'Miss Navy Island', Chantelle Fisher; 'Miss Port Royal', Patrice Francis; 'Miss Emancipation Park' Jade Fulford; 'Miss Castleton Gardens', Shelani Hoilett; 'Miss Boston Jerk', Usheka James; 'Miss Montego Bay', Tiffany Lee; 'Miss Ocho Rios', Tess Maria Leon; 'Miss Lovers Leap', Melissa Lindo; 'Miss Rio Grande', Christine Mighty; 'Miss Blue Mountain Peak', Sabrina Palomino; 'Miss Negril Beach', Rosemarie Powell; 'Miss Hellshire Beach', Rebecca Robertson; 'Miss Reggae Music', Camille Russell; 'Miss Treasure Beach', Kerrian Sang and 'Miss Fern Gully', Jasinta Walters. For making it to the final 20 the contestants were presented with gift packages from Maybelline, Colgate, Libresse and Digicel. The show had opened a half-hour after its scheduled 7:00 p.m. start with a dance number from the Cathi Levy Players. They were followed by the 46 young women who were vying for spots in the final 20. Included among them were Christine Mighty, a finalist in 2002, and Donette Robb, a young woman who tried and failed to make the lot last year. Back then, Robb was described as a petite plus-sized model, from the garden parish of St. Ann. At that time her statistics were read as 120lbs, 36 - 24 - 39'. In a year, very little has changed for Robb and cheers, jeers and laughter greeted her entry and exit from the stage. She again did not make the final 20. One contestant who got unanimous crowd support was Jasinta Walters. She earned the audience's admiration and support because of her incredibly-toned body. She looked like a prospective Jamaica Body Beautiful winner. After more entertainment from the Cathi Levy Players the finalists were announced. However, there was a twist to the sashing. This year their sashes are named using famous Jamaican places and parts of our culture, and not the sponsoring businesses, a change which raised more than a few eyebrows. Among the prizes that Miss Jamaica World 2003 will take home are a Peugeot 206, a trip to London, a Uzuri International wardrobe and a $100,000 cash award. The finals are on August 30, at the Jamaica Pegasus, and the winner will go on to represent Jamaica in the Miss World pageant on December 6, in Sanya, China.
