THE POLICE in Montego Bay, St. James, yesterday shot and killed two gunmen, injured a third and detained a fourth, following an alleged armed robbery by the men in the parish.
A .38 firearm and four cellular phones were reportedly recovered from the thieves who staged the daring heist at Artwell's Easi Access Plaza on Barnett Street, Montego Bay.
Up to press time, there was no information available as to the whereabouts of the stolen money or the identities of the men.
Reports are that the men went into a business place at the plaza sometime after 9:30 a.m. and robbed the secretary of an undetermined sum of money and the phones. They then ran away from the office.
An eyewitness told The Gleaner that while the men were escaping from the area, an armoured truck arrived at the building to do a money pick-up, when the secretary made an alarm.
"A security guard fired two shots and one of the boys (thieves) fired back. Some time after that a police team that just happened to be driving by took on the men," she said.
"The police turned on the shots on them and one fell before he could reach the nearby Barnett River. Another then took off his clothes to swim across but he too was unfortunate, the eyewitness said.
The other two were detained in the nearby community of Westgreen. When The Gleaner team went to the community, an ambulance was preparing to transport the injured man to the Cornwall Regional Hospital. He is now under police guard in hospital. The fourth man is behind bars at the Montego Bay Police Station.
The Montego Bay Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) is probing the case.
