Make an example of policeman
published: Tuesday | July 29, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE with regard to your story on page A3 of The Gleaner dated Wednesday, July 23, 2003, entitled 'Man held in girl's death', where you mentioned that the policeman who allegedly made the unpleasant statement is being transferred to Portmore.

It is of great concern to me as a resident of Portmore, and as a mother.

This man needs to be disciplined; merely transferring him won't help. He needs to be suspended without pay as punishment for his statement. Too often we read in the papers about the way persons in distress are treated and spoken to by the police. He needs to be used as an example to show other policemen who often practise such behaviour.

Mr. Commissioner, you need to take him back to the drawing board before you send him to our sunshine city.

I am, etc.,
