Do fishers pay taxes?
published: Wednesday | July 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OVER THE years, we, the people, have become so dependent on, and expect government - PNP or JLP- to do everything for us. Yet, most times those who call on the government for help do not contribute to the tax base or they avoid paying taxes. I won't pick on the private sector.

We now have some fishermen who are supposedly stranded in Central America. Some, for over 30 years, and they are now calling on the government for help to come back home. Utter rubbish, I say!

These men, some with dual families, got caught up in time and have not accomplished much; now they want the government to dole out to them. Fishermen (like the private sector) have been feeding off the hog (the government) for far too long. Fishermen are given subsidy yet they pay no taxes on income. The government sends air and sea rescue, at great cost, to retrieve these men when they are in peril. Yet, they pay no taxes.

I would advise these men to put their plight to the Fisher-men's Co-operative. This co-operative has done nothing to further the cause of fishermen or the fishing industry. This is one time they could do some good for their supposedly stranded comrades.

I am etc.,
