Foolishness or fraud?
published: Wednesday | July 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I LISTENED to the commercials for Cable and Wireless' new mobile service offer. I noticed all the hype and so I decided to call them to find out about it, especially since I heard that they would be using chips in their phones (like Digicel). I also called Digicel to find out about their offer - called DigiVibes - which seems to be the same system as what Cable and Wireless is offering. I was curious because they don't seem to be hyping it as much as C & W.

When I called Digicel to find out about their offer, I was told that the service was available to all the clients as long as they had a compatible phone. All their customers had to do, they said, was to call in and have the company activate the features for them.

When I called C & W, I was told that the new features that they have been hyping so much are available only to their post-paid customers.

I was so stunned. I guess I shouldn't have been, but I was. When I called someone to pass on the information, I said to them that the "owner fi di yard is talking foolishness", to which the person replied, 'No, di owner fi di yard is telling lies". Hmmmmm, I agree.

After the "launch" of C&W's new system, I heard a man saying C&W was now the best and that that was what was wrong with Jamaicans - we always give up old for new. He went on to the benefits of the old broom as opposed to the new. I wonder if he knows what the old broom is offering?

I am etc.,
