Changing lanes
published: Wednesday | July 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE CONVERSION of the Three Miles roundabout to a major intersection has reduced the traffic congestion in that area during rush hours. A similar project is being attempted with the roundabout where the Spanish Town bypass meets the Mandela Highway.

Unlike the Three Miles roundabout, this roundabout has much more land space. Has due consideration been made for:

1 Traffic leaving Spanish Town on to the Mandela Highway, and

2 Traffic leaving Mandela Highway on to the Spanish Town Bypass?

These single lanes should not be incorporated into a signal-light intersection and should provide continuous traffic flow. There is ample land space to facilitate these lanes "sandwiching" the intersection. The only motorists who will be slightly inconvenienced are those leaving Spanish Town and turning right to the Jose Marti School. These motorists will have to continue along Mandela for approximately 300 feet, make a U-turn and merge with the traffic heading west.

If there is any merit to the above, I strongly recommend its implementation. The present road infrastructure was not predicated on the current volume of traffic and in seven years there is no guessing what it will be.

I am etc.,

WAYNE CLARKE

Old Harbour
