What about the men?
published: Thursday | July 31, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ALL THIS hype about virginity test for girls under 16!

Again it is the poor girls, who are already abused, who are targeted for further humiliation and abuse.

What about the men who are the predators? We do have laws on our books to deal with them. However, over the years, like several other laws in our society, this one has been ignored. Men have been allowed to get away with forcing themselves on our young girls. They are not brought to justice and even when arrested very few are convicted.

Yet another heinous crime to which we close our eyes!

When will we learn that we need to spend time with our boys educating them about respect for womanhood? We should be training them that when a woman says 'No' to sex, she means 'No'; that girls under the age of 16 cannot say 'Yes'. It is always 'No'. We should be training them to be protectors of their sisters and other girls rather than being their sexual exploiters and molesters.

We should help them to understand that being great studs does not make them into responsible men. We should help them to see girls not just as sexual objects to be used to satisfy their basic desires. But even if we train them we need our grown men to be role models, showing their sons how to be responsible and how to relate appropriately to women.

When will we begin to make a public example of men who have had sexual relations with girls under the age of consent and got them pregnant? Too often parents are willing to settle the matter out of court with a few thousand dollars, selling the very souls of their daughters and condoning this evil in our midst.

Our daughters are being destroyed by many of our men, both educated and uneducated. Men, you need to take stock of yourselves and help us to destroy this weapon of mass destruction in our midst. Spare our daughters, PLEASE!

I am, etc.,
