Refreshing Rastafari reasoning
published: Thursday | July 31, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The 'Rastafari Global Reasoning' Conference which was held on the Mona Campus recently was very refreshing. There were Rastas from all over the world.

One such individual was Ras Seymour McLean. An article appeared in The Gleaner on July 21 where Ras McLean was interviewed and gave some very informative and important facts on African affairs.

IDENTITY

Ras McLean, who is a consultant on African Affairs and based in Britain, left Jamaica in 1966. I always wonder if African history is a subject taught in our school curriculum? When you ask children in Jamaica their identity, they will quickly tell you that they are Jamaicans. We refuse to use the word African.

The moral, cultural and racial identity of the Jamaican people was destroyed by the colonial masters. Jamaicans are living off the English morality. The Chinese, Indians, Syrians, and Europeans are identified with their race. We have a race yet we do not practise our identity.

I am, etc.,

ROY CRUICKSHANK
