Start with the men
published: Friday | August 1, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FROM TIME immemorial women have borne the blunt of society's wrath. They are blamed for most, if not all the ills in society. Some preachers in quoting the Bible accused Eve, the first woman - if you believe - of causing Adam to sin. No responsibility was placed on Adam for his action (eating the forbidden fruit).

The rise in the number of unwanted children is again placed at the feet of women. No responsibility is put on the men who impregnate them. It is sad that the Member of Parliament, a woman, who called for the tubal ligation of women who have more children than they can care for, has not made similar call for men who sire these children. A woman can give single birth every 10 months. On the other hand a man can impregnate as many women as he can in that 10-month period. The issue of unwanted pregnancy should indeed be bought to the fore with a view to curtailing this trend. However, the responsibility for a child coming into this world should not be placed only on the mother - but moreso on the man who is free to spread seeds all over.

If the MP is serious about sterilisation she should start with men who have sired these unwanted children.

I am, etc.,

AUTHNEL S REID.
