Mt Alvernia's performance
published: Friday | August 1, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN HIS article "Schools and the CXC, 2002", Stephen Vascianne mentions Mt. Alvernia's "apparently meteoric rise" (in performance) based on the school's performance in English Language for 2002 over that in 2001. He explains that for 2001, less than 50 per cent of Mt. Alvernia's eligible cohort took CXC English Language. Since his analysis is based on data presented in the NCE's publication, he is accurate. The facts, however, are that:

1. The publication erroneously stated that our eligible cohort for 2001 was 480. It was 218.

2. The pass rate for 2001 (English Language) was 86 per cent.

3. Every student at Mt. Alvernia sits English Language and Mathematics. We do not "screen".

I commend the NCE and Mr. Vasciannie on their efforts to inform, enlighten and challenge. I also commend the Mt. Alvernia staff for their commitment to excellence.

I am, etc.,

SR. ANGELLA HARRIS, OSF

Principal

Mt. Alvernia High
