By Anthony Foster, Freelance WriterNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE Kerron Stewart heads a list of seven St. Jago High School athletes awarded scholarships to attend universities and colleges in the United States.
Stewart, the 2003 VMBS/ISSA Boys and Girls Championships sprint double winner, was given a place at Essex County College where she will have the company of schoolmates Michelle Williamson, Tresha Henry and Clora Williams.
The other awardees are: quarter-miler Patrice Tinglin, who is off to Praire View University, Marvin Pinnock, a middle-distance runner who heads to Louisiana State University (LSU), and triple jumper Peta-Gaye O'Conner is on her way to
Maryland University, Washington DC.
Stewart is by far the most accomplished athlete on the list. The talented 19-year-old has been dazzling on the track all season, not only taking the sprint double at champs but also copping the CARIFTA 100m dash crown for Under-20 girls.
The Raymond 'KC' Graham-coached athlete, who just returned from a successful European tour, will leave in the middle of next month to attend the New Jersey school.
For Stewart, gaining a scholarship overseas is a dream come true. Speaking with The Gleaner's YOUTH LINK magazine recently, she disclosed that her plans for this year were to move on to a tertiary institution and secondly to make the national senior team for the World Track & Field Championships in Paris.
