THE EDITOR, Sir:
HAS THE Opposition gone mad?! We are to resort to draconian measures in order to combat teenage pregnancy? Sure, go ahead and violate the rights of young girls whose rights have already been taken advatage of by many men in our society...and now by heartless older men (Mr. E. Smith?) and unthinking older women (Haye-Webster?). And sterilisation?
We are not fighting overpopulation my dear, so by removing a woman's right to have as many children as she wants, then we would be on a one-way road to disaster. Wake up Jamaica. The only way to combat teen pregnancy is through education - of children and adults - students and their parents/guardians. Why is is that measures are only being suggested for the young women? You think girls get pregnant by themselves? Maybe we need to start the education process in the House of Parliament!
Young men need to be made aware of the consequences of their actions.
How dare you suggest violating young women's rights by testing for their virginity? When that is done, what is the next step? You think by humiliating the young girl, she is going to cough up the name of the man/men she had slept with? Then clearly you do not understand the reasons why many of these girls have sex willingly at such a tender age (12 -16).
Money and status. If you grow up in a society that puts material things above education and morals, then what do you expect? Wake up Jamaica, it is a proven fact that higher education of women leads to lower (societal) fertility rates. Check your nearest UWI professor in the Department of Economics. When is the last time you saw a UWI female graduate with three to four children hanging around her skirt tail?
