THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE JAMAICAN teachers again have been hurled with insult. The ministry waited until the appointed time to inform teachers that their salaries would be late. It is no secret that the adage "work from han' to mout"" applies to teachers because they have no choice due to the ridiculous salary they receive monthly.
I am sure many teachers were forced to seek funds elsewhere in order to survive the few days' delay. Whenever a teacher is to be endowed in whatever form, the ministry intricately weaves webs to prolong the process, then call it bureaucracy.
The time has come for teachers (who perform the roles of babysitters, counsellors, police and parents), to be treated with respect.
Teachers spend more time with children than parents do. They are emotionally drained, physically burdened. Need I say more?
They deserve to be treated with high regard. I am sick of it! I don't blame them for wanting to escape to greener pastures; at least they are paid for the abuse they undergo. Again, I don't blame them. If that is the only way to make a comfortable lifestyle and maintain their sanity.
By the way, where is the JTA in all of this? Were they informed of this action? If I were dying, I would not trust them with my life. I would prefer to sing "Lord I am coming home."
Teachers, if you decide to stay in this system I applaud you. If you choose to leave, hats off nonetheless.
I am etc.,
