Alleged sex offender remains unidentified
published: Saturday | August 2, 2003

By Erica James-King, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

FOR THE fourth consecutive time, an identification parade (ID) has failed to positively identify the man accused of the serial sexual assault of primary school children in St. James.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Derrick Knight, Crime Chief for St. James, told The Gleaner that one of the victims who participated in the last ID parade held on Wednesday, did not pinpoint the man in question, as the offender.

IMPEDE INVESTIGATION

This will serve to further impede investigation into the case, which has hit several snags. Previously, some of the 15 children who were carnally abused by the alleged serial rapist, have been so badly affected by their ordeal, that their parents have been reluctant to allow them to participate in the identification parades.

Indications are that the police will now have to hinge their case heavily on the results of the DNA tests on the accused and his victims. The crime fighters expect that the results of those tests will be available within a few days.

"The St. James police should be in possession of the preliminary results of the DNA tests of both the suspect and the victims, by early next week," DSP Knight said.

In the meantime, the man accused of carnally abusing the children between the ages of six and nine, remains in police custody.

On another crime-related matter, an identification parade scheduled for Thursday, for two persons who are in police custody in connection with a double murder in Glendevon, did not take place.

The procedure did not get off the ground because of reasons the St. James CIB are refusing to divulge. The lawmen are, however, insisting that although a date has not yet been decided on, another ID parade for the two men, will be scheduled for next week.
