Think twice, Desmond McKenzie
published: Tuesday | August 5, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS listening to the news recently and heard Councillor Desmond McKenzie, the newly-appointed Mayor of Kingston, mention that a six-week course was not sufficient qualification.

I am most disappointed with that speech. As the Mayor or any citizen for that matter, we should encourage our people to seek educational attainment. I did a six-week course at the University of the West Indies School of Continuing Education when I left high school and this was the foundation for further studies in this area.

That six-week course helped me significantly at work, where I was just a clerical assistant.

Mr. McKenzie, you might not have planned your speech correctly but next time when you speak about education and development - think twice.

Best wishes on your endeavours and congratulations on your victory.

I am, etc.,
