New water treatment facility needed
published: Tuesday | August 5, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN THE debate surrounding the closure and redevelopment of the Hampden Sugar and Rum facility, there is an added major benefit, which could come with the new facility, to which no one has alluded.

The old factory and distillery, as they operated, regularly discharged vinasse into the Queen of Spain Valley water resource. This water resource is the partial "life" of the supply to Montego Bay and other areas on our North Coast.

Had operations continued on an "as you were" basis, there is every possibility that the protective shelf would have been broken and the entire groundwater resource contaminated, possibly beyond recovery.

I am confident that the owners of the "soon to come" replacement facility will ensure that a modern, state-of-the-art waste treatment facility forms part of the new design and that it is built and professionally managed in the interest of the nation's water resource.

I am, etc.,
