Sex and decadence
published: Tuesday | August 5, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

SEXUAL PROMISCUITY has reached alarming proportions with most men regarding women as targets to satisfy their uncontrollable lusts regardless of the moral and social implications.

Therefore even innocent pre-adolescent girls become fodder in satisfying these vulgar and insatiable sexual appetites. Some women should not be absolved as the demeaning manner in which they display themselves contribute to men's disrespectful attitudes towards them.

The negative moral and social implications of this matter deserves priority attention from a national perspective by initiating islandwide educational programmes, the objective of which is to re-orient our minds towards moral and social decency as a whole.

Respect for our fellowmen and generally acceptable lifestyles have degenerated to such an extent that immediate action needs to be pursued in order to contain and control this monster.

A sensitisation programme designed by a qualified and competent sociologist or human relations specialist ought to be adopted and implemented with dispatch to deal with the matter. As a national priority this should form part of the national budget as well as enlisting involvement and contributions from the private sector and other institutions (NGOs). Each individual should be sensitised to assume a personal responsibility in contributing to this effort.

The country is dying - it needs an injection.

I am, etc.,

Alfonso F. Jacques
