'Redemption Song', bigger but not better
published: Tuesday | August 5, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I MUST say I am appalled that a sculpture of that type has been installed at the Emancipation Park. It would be interesting to know what the artist had in mind but I think it is in poor taste to have a sculpture with male and female genitals exposed and so exaggerated, erected in a public place. Many persons find it offensive and we need to consider the numerous children who visit the park daily.

If my memory serves me right, the first sculpture by A.D. Scott was controversial because of its sexual overtones but this one has taken things to the extreme. Is this statue funded by a private individual or is it funded by all taxpayers? If the latter is true, then a representative group should have viewed it to ensure its acceptability even long before it was installed.

I have nothing against nudity, but there is a time and place for everything. The park has been a real delight and as Jamaicans we have been proud to show it off. Why now have we brought in this sculpture, no doubt at great expense, to make so many of us feel ill at ease?

I am, etc.,

CELIA JACKSON
