THE EDITOR, Sir:

I OFFER some comments on the controversial sculpture at Emancipation Park. Art is often controversial, sometimes even misunderstood. This piece, which is obviously a great work of art, seems rather inappropriate for a public park, even despite its 'Emancipation' theme.

One would've expected something more abstract to stimulate thought, adding to the serenity and beauty of the park grounds or even an artistic impression in the form of a large fountain or waterfall. Nudity in art, displayed outdoors in public, ought to be tasteful considering the surroundings and those likely to be drawn to it. This sculpture, as is, would certainly have more appeal, or perhaps been better understood inside a building. Why generate the wrath of those who visit the park with this form of public nudity, albeit in art?

The National Gallery of Art would be the perfect home for this piece or even if displayed centrally in the large foyer of some national building.

Now rather than enlightening our people about art and the meaning behind the piece, it has evoked laughter, ridicule, and even anger for those who see it as nothing more than pornography in bronze.

This is the 21st century, let's move on and be more progressive, especially in our creative and productive endeavours! We really do need to free our minds!

I am, etc.,
