Mason, Foster on fire
published: Wednesday | August 6, 2003

Mason...cleared record-breaking 2.32 metres. - File

JAMAICA'S GERMAINE Mason produced a 2003 world leading height to erase his own national high jump record on his way to capturing gold at yesterday's DN Galan/Super Grand Prix Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.

Mason cleared 2.32 metres to better his previous national mark of 2.31 while his Jamaican teammate, Brigitte Foster, raced to a fast 12.79 for victory in the 100m hurdles at the same meet.

Yesterday's height was not only Mason's personal best but a 2003 world best as no other jumper has gone past the 2.30-metre.

On his way to victory the University of Technology (UTech) student left behind Sweden's Stefan Holm (2.30m) and Matt Hemingway of the Unite States (2.27m).

Foster won her event in 12.79 seconds, over the US pair of Donica Merriman (12.89) and Melissa Morrison (12.91).

Brandon Simpson kept up his good form in the 400m with silver in 45.62 behind the US's Derrick Brew, who was timed in 45.28. Eric Milazar of Mauritius was third in 45.72.

In the men's 100m, Julien Dunkley missed out on a place in the final after his 10.44 gave him sixth in heat two. The final was won by the US's Justin Gatlin in 10.15, ahead of teammate Joshua J. Johnson (10.22).

Meanwhile, former Jamaican sprint queen Merlene Ottey, now running for Slovenia, finished fifth in the women's 100m final. Christine Arron of France (11.11), the US's Chryste Gaines (11.13), Torri Edwards of the US (11.25) and Zhanna Pintusevich-Block of Ukraine (11.34) finished ahead of Ottey.
