A PREGNANT woman was among 13 persons who suffered injuries in separate motor vehicle
accidents in St. Ann and St. Catherine, yesterday.
Reports are that the first of the two accidents occurred on the Old Harbour bypass, south west St. Catherine.
Sgt. Gregory Silvera, head of the Old Harbour Police Traffic Department, told The Gleaner that shortly after 8 a.m. a Toyota Corolla car, travelling toward May Pen, overtook a line of traffic and collided with another car going in the opposite direction. A third vehicle which swerved onto the soft shoulder to avoid the collision, got out of control, skidded and collided with another vehicle.
"It was a four-vehicle collision and the firemen had to cut loose some of them from the vehicles," said Sgt. Silvera. He said that at least seven persons, including two children, were seriously injured in the accident.
PILE-UP
The accident resulted in a pile-up of vehicular traffic for several hours. Firemen washed grease from the road surface.
Cpl. Troy Anderson of the Constabulary Communication Network said that six persons were injured in the second accident which occurred about 9:15 a.m. on Retirement main road, St. Ann.
The injured included a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Shellian Mahabeer, of Victoria Street, Linstead, St. Catherine, who suffered serious injuries to an eye.
