THE EDITOR, Sir:
FOR THE last few days since the erection of the 'Redemption Song' statue in Emancipation Park there has been so much bickering about it.
It is my view that the various comments all seem so petty and shallow and so far have said nothing of what the statue represents "a work of art and an artist's impression of Redemption Song".
Why is it that we as a people can only tear down and never see or appreciate the positive side of anything that has happened in this country? Is it that we are so afraid of our own nakedness or is it that after 41 years we have not been truly emancipated?
Please give this beautiful piece of art a rest. It is not about anyone's personal inadequacy and let's face it, it's not anyone's personal portraits on display in the park. "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery" and be a lot more open-minded. I think both Redemption Song and Emancipation Park are picture perfect.
I am, etc.,
